Crée en 2014, The Game Awards est une soirée de récompenses pour les jeux vidéo, elle a lieu annuellement et est présenté par Geoff Keighley. Les nommés sont sélectionnés parmi les jeux récents par 29 médias spécialisés dont Famitsu, Polygon, Games Radar, IGN ou encore JeuxVideo.com, ensuite ces derniers voteront pour déterminer les vainqueurs de chaque catégorie hors certaines. La cérémonie se déroulera le 2 décembre à 2H00 heure française et sera disponible en streaming direct sur Twitch et YouTube.

Cette année une nouvelle catégorie a été crée « Meilleur jeu en réalité virtuelle » pour correspondre à la sortie des casques de réalité virtuelle, tandis-qu’une catégorie a été supprimé « Meilleur jeu original ».
